Tender Announcement for “Play Therapy Training”

Scope of Work for Play Therapy Training

Background

Relief International (RI) specializes in relief and development programs that benefit people in acute distress. A registered non-profit in the US, UK, France, and Belgium, our work targets those fragile countries or communities that suffer from recurrent man-made or natural crises that impede human development.

RI provides mental health (MH) and physical rehabilitation (PR) services to conflict-affected Syrian refugees in Turkey. Since 2014, RI has aimed to support the Government of Turkey in providing specialized health services to Syrian refugees.

RI currently implements projects in seven refugee-hosting cities, including the large metropolitan areas of İstanbul, Ankara and İzmir, and the Syrian border cities of Hatay, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, and Kilis. This is done through six partner (UOSSM, NSPPL, MUDEM, Maya, Multeciler, and MENTOR).

In line with the RI Strategic Plan with regard to capacity building and quality of services provided by partners; RI intends to organize a training on Play Therapy targeting psychologists and clinical psychologists who are working in RI ‘partners MH and psycho-social support (MHPSS) Centers.

Therapists strategically utilize play therapy to help children express what is troubling them when they do not have the verbal language to express their thoughts and feelings. In play therapy, toys are like the child’s words and play is the child’s language. Through play, therapists may help children learn more adaptive behaviors when there are emotional or social skills deficits. Play therapy may also be used to promote cognitive development and provide insight about and resolution of inner conflicts or dysfunctional thinking in the child.

Furthermore, research suggests Play Therapy is an effective mental health approach, regardless of age, gender, or the nature of the problem, and works best when a parent, family member, or caretaker is actively involved in the treatment process.

Since RI operates several mental health centers that provide specialized MHPSS services to all groups, especially children who have experienced disaster conditions, raising the capacity of partners in this area will help them to deal with these children with higher professionalism and better quality services.

The main purpose of the Play Therapy services trainer is to build participants’ expertise on working with children who have relational, emotional and behavioral challenges using a relationship-based approach. The training intends to provide participants with an expertise on play therapy techniques.

The training is expected to ensure participants will:

  • Develop basic knowledge of the Child and Play Therapy including history, theory, legal and ethical considerations, and child social-emotional development.
