WHAT IS RESULTS-BASED MANAGEMENT?

RBM is a management strategy by which all actors ensure that their:

  • Processes;
  • Products; and
  • Services

contribute to the achievement of desired results of:

  • Outputs;
  • Outcomes; and
  • Higher-level Goals / Impact.

Information on results is then used to support decision-making on the design and delivery of programmes and activities, and for accountability and reporting.

RBM is integrated into the whole project cycle from identification to evaluation.

It begins with planning – such as setting the vision and defining the results framework. Next, implementation starts and monitoring becomes essential to ensure results are being achieved. Throughout the project M&E provides vital information for decision-making as well as lessons learned for the future.

COURSE OUTCOMES

Through this practical training, you will:

  • Understand the philosophy and principles of RBM
  • Be able to apply Results-Based Management throughout the project cycle (identification – formulation – implementation – monitoring/evaluation and reporting)
  • Be able to apply the Logical Framework Approach (LFA) for project identification, design and planning
  • Be able to monitor and evaluate your projects in a systematic way, leading to more effective achevement of project results
  • Develop your own project plan using LFA and design a Monitoring & Evaluation Plan to support effective implementation.

WHAT TO EXPECT

While this course covers all the essential theory, the focus is on practical application of skills.
Presentations, tasks and group discussions will be supplemented with regular practical work as you apply the skills and design your own project and build your own M&E Plan. Expect lots of group work and practical tasks.

Only a small number of participants will be admitted for the training to ensure sufficient practical work, and that everyone is able to apply all the concepts and tools.

A selection of the “best of the best” resource materials will be provided on flash disc, as well as all training slides (in PowerPoint) and all key sessions on video. Participants will also receive two free ELD Toolkits (PDF, 250 pages each) on Reporting Skills and Proposal Writing – self-study manuals to further develop their skills after the course.

Each participant will be invited to submit their M&E Plan for one-to-one feedback after the course is over.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

RBM isn’t just for managers – and it isn’t just for M&E staff, either. However, if you oversee a project, or have an M&E role, then this course is definitely for you.

However, RBM and M&E aren’t / shouldn’t be the domain of only managers and M&E people. In a healthy project, M&E is everyone’s responsibility, and the first-hand knowledge of implementation staff offers positive benefits to the planning process.

For too long, planning and M&E have been seen as separate functions, disconnected from project operations. However, all project staff will benefit from this training (and their projects will also benefit as they integrate this approach into their work). We have trained entire teams of INGO staff in this area, ensuring greater synergy within projects, more effective delivery of services and, ultimately, better outcomes for their stakeholders.

ABOUT THE TRAINER

Neil Kendrick is a trainer and facilitator on Results-Based Management, Logical Framework Approach, Reporting Skills and Proposal Writing with over 20 years’ global experience training and consulting to aid organisations.

He founded ELD Training in Nepal in 2000, designing and delivering training courses and consultancy assignments to NGOs, INGOs and International Organisations, and building and managing a team of consultants / facilitators, before extending ELD’s operations into Thailand, Ethiopia, Kenya and Turkey.

His work has included travel to over 25 countries in 4 continents for clients such as IADB, Oxfam, Save the Children and various UN agencies.

While the primary focus has been training / capacity building, assignments have also included such things as Strategic Planning workshops, programme evaluations and grant / proposal development.

He has published 3 toolkits – Reporting Skills (adopted by UNICEF), Project Planning & Proposal Writing and Case Study Writing.

Over last 5 years he has specialised further into Results-Based Management, Monitoring & Evaluation, resulting in more than 20 workshops in Nepal, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Thailand, Turkey, Kenya and the UK, as well as many customised training assignments.

Participants regularly refer to his ability to demystify complex ideas in a simple, straight-forward and humorous way.
