Business Manager- Middle East and North Africa

About the Opportunity

Under the supervision of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Regional Director, the MENA Business Manager’s primary responsibility is monitoring, supporting, and analyzing the portfolio’s financial performance and operations. The Business Manager will lead and supervise the Business Operations Team. The Business Manager will be expected to perform complex financial tasks requiring prior experience in nonprofit financial management.

Logistics

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Internews’ Headquarters offices are closed and staff are working remotely until at least 1 July 2021. This position is remote, but applicants who are interested in working in a physical office should feel free to express that desire. You must have work authorization in your location that does not require sponsorship from Internews. Additionally, there are locations in which Internews is not able to remote work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Programmatic (60%)

Track program budgets and provide analysis for departments, including:

Creating and maintaining program budgets for each project;

Reconciling program budgets with actual expenses on a monthly basis;

Meeting with Program Managers/Directors to review expenditures and projections;

Assisting Program Managers/Directors to revise projections based on implementation needs/changes and monitor direct cost line shift in program budgets;

Creating proposal budget development for new projects and modifications and adjustments of current budgets including cost extensions and no-cost extensions;

Developing Resource Sharing Agreements (RSAs) or Alliance Accounting Agreements (PAAs and SWAs) for joint IUS/IEU projects and/or shared costs;

Tracking staff labor allocations (LOE) and forecasts across programs and indirect funding and provide labor analyses as needed by the Regional Director and Program Managers/Directors;

Preparing advanced financial analysis & reporting utilizing ERP system, including working with the Senior Director of Budgeting and Internal Reporting to forecast expenses;

Assisting Regional Director with compiling regular reports and analysis to senior management;

Developing and monitoring the portfolio’s subgrants in close coordination with the Subgrants Officer;

Providing budget authority as needed for subgrants, procurements, and other payments;

Coordinating with Grants and Contracts on request for obligations or other mods to awards;

Liaising with field accounts, Project Managers/Directors, Regional Director, and HQ Senior Program Officers to improve internal policies and procedures.

Corporate (40%)

Developing and monitoring the department’s indirect budget in coordination with the Regional Director and Business Operations Officer;

Working closely with Regional Director on overall strategy and vision for the MENA department;

Supervising the Business Operations Team;

Monitoring and resolving financial obligation issues with funders;

Supporting implementation of policies, procedures, and audit finding responses;

Serving as lead liaison to HQ Operations department with assistance from other members of the Business Operations Team;

Understanding of and demonstrated commitment to upholding Internews’ Core Values.

Qualifications We’re Looking For

Required

Relevant university degree or equivalent; master’s degree preferred;

5+ years of progressively complex finance experience;

Grant proposal and budget development experience;

Experience with financial analysis, accounting, bookkeeping, and financial management;

Experience with MS Excel and Word;

Superior analytical ability;

Excellent oral communication and presentation skills;

Proven organization skills, with attention to detail;

Proven ability to set priorities, multi-task and manage time effectively;

Proven ability to operate effectively in a multicultural environment;

Demonstrated interpersonal skills including diplomacy, tact, and the ability to negotiate;

Proven analytical and problem-solving ability;

Fluent and excellent reading and written in English.

Preferred

Regional language proficiency – Arabic, French, Kurdish, and/or Dari/Pashto;

Accounting certification or advanced degree;

Experience working with remote teams.
