Youth Case Worker (Settlement)

REPORTS TO: Manager, Youth Programs (Education, Settlement and Leadership)

SALARY: $46,410

Position Summary

The Youth Case Worker (Settlement) is responsible for connecting and engaging with newcomer

youth: Permanent Residents and Convention Refugees. The YCW will be responsible for the provision

of direct and indirect services with the ultimate goal of supporting each client’s successful integration

into Canadian society. This will be accomplished through identifying and outreaching for youth in

schools and in the community. New clients will be supported with an Intake and Needs Assessment,

followed by the co-creation of goals and a Settlement plan. YCW will manage a caseload of 30-40

youth, follow up on settlement goals through 1 on 1s, facilitate internal/external referrals and

coordinate programs that speak to the community’s needs. The outcomes of the program include:

increased knowledge of Canada/Canadian systems, improved language & employability skills and

increase in social capital through engagement in programs and civic leadership.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities

Program Coordination

Support program staff in supervising programs and facilitating where necessary

Develop and facilitate group programs and workshops for newcomer youth

Develop work plans and logic models with an understanding of the barriers youth face and their

changing needs

Work closely with the Youth Outreach Worker and Program & Volunteer Coordinator to develop

strategies for maintaining and improving FYI’s outreach and community engagement strategies

Case Management

Work collaboratively with all program staff to develop effective service delivery plans that

ensure that youth have access to programs, services and opportunities

Support internal and external referral processes for clients

Manage a caseload of 30-40 active youth clients and provide periodic one-on-one sessions that

focus on developing and achieving clients’ settlement goals

Administrative Duties

Collect the necessary documentation required in serving newcomer clients

Maintain comprehensive client files and case notes utilizing FYI’s database system, tools and

procedures

Support training and on-boarding of program support staff

Provide periodic reporting updates to manager in Progress Update meetings and Monthly

Reports

Document work with youth and partners using organizational database

Support the evaluation of the program by conducting interviews, focus groups, surveys, and

other data collection methods as needed

Other administrative duties as required

Required Experience (2 years minimum):Education:
The minimum level of education is a community college diploma in human services and social studies

related education (social work, volunteer engagement, community work, International development,

etc).

Skills, Knowledge, & Experience:
Preference for candidates who are fluent in one (or more) of the following: Spanish, Tagalog,

Portuguese, Somali, Arabic, Turkish, Vietnamese

Coordinating services in community centres and/or in different program spaces

Developing and maintaining organizational partnerships

Case Management and overseeing a client caseload

Coordinating programs around Settlement, Education and Civic Leadership

Organizational development work, particularly with young people in a non-profit context

Working from an outcome-based/evidence-based programming model

Demonstrated ability to work in culturally diverse communities, with a particular understanding

of the challenges facing youth from economically and culturally marginalized communities

Understanding of community based, youth-led and youth-serving work, common models of

service provision, and functions of nonprofit organizational structures

Expected Job Outcomes

The position has an overall impact on accomplishing FYI’s mission to support Black, racialized,

and newcomer youth in York South-Weston as they prepare for the future with the resources and

mentorship they need to thrive. FYI’s six areas of focus are: Educational attainment, Workplace

Readiness, Youth Justice, Newcomer Settlement, Civic Leadership, and Advocacy.

Equipment Used

Experience and knowledge of using regular office equipment including computers,

photocopiers, printers, projector, fax, etc.

Working Relationship

Works under the supervision of the Manager, Youth Programs

Will work with and support colleagues, including placement students, to complete tasks.

The position interacts with staff, supervisors, managers, volunteers of FYI, the general public,

partner organizations, corporate partners, and other organizations.

Working Condition

Hours of work: Works regular hours from 10:00AM – 6:30PM with some requirement to work

extended hours and weekends.

Location: Works from FYI, 1652 Keele Street, and may be required to work from other locations

based on funders or programs changing requirements.
