The Middle East studies intern will conduct research in support of AEI Resident Scholars Michael Rubin and Kenneth Pollack. Rubin’s research interests span Morocco to Afghanistan, and his current research focus includes US policy in the Middle East and North Africa, Turkish politics, US relations with Iran, and Arab politics. Pollack’s research interests span the Arab world and Iran, particularly regarding US grand strategy in the Middle East, US engagement with Iraq, and Arab military effectiveness.
The Middle East studies intern will conduct research for book chapters, journal publications, magazine articles, and op-eds on issues related to Middle Eastern politics and US diplomatic and military policy in the region. The ideal intern candidate will have a strong academic record, demonstrated interest in the region, and prior published undergraduate or graduate research. An enthusiasm for open-source research and ability to translate Persian primary source documents to English are strongly preferred.
AEI’s summer 2021 internship program will be conducted remotely– interns will need access to a personal computer and a stable internet connection. There will be two start dates for the summer program: June 1 and June 7. The program will run for a minimum of 10 weeks, although most interns’ end dates fall around late August.
Intern Scholarship Program
In the summer of 2021, AEI will offer up to six intern candidates a $1,000 monthly living stipend as part of a need-based scholarship program. Our hope is to allow students who would not be able to do so without financial assistance to reap the academic, professional, and personal benefits of interning at AEI.
