Departmental Overview
Founded in 1963, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies promotes the interdisciplinary study of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) at the University of California, Berkeley, and beyond, raising public awareness of the region’s diverse peoples, languages, cultures and their connection to wider global contexts. A Title VI National Resource Center for more than three decades, UC Berkeley’s CMES is widely recognized as one of the country’s most important sources of knowledge about the Arab world, Iran, Israel, and Turkey.
Responsibilities
Working with the Chair to participate in short- and long-term strategic planning for grant-making, program evaluation, and research strategies for the CMES, with the aim of elevating the profile of Middle Eastern studies on campus and beyond, including internationally.
Establishing the CMES’s development effort and serves as a primary consultant for large or complex research grant programs/initiatives, including regular donor research and cultivation, grant-writing, and other fundraising activities.
Fully managing the CMES Title VI grant, i.e., monitoring the priorities of the Department of Education, positioning CMES programs to align with these priorities, managing both the proposalwriting and post-proposal reporting and evaluation processes required by the grant, implementing Title VI deliverables, such as, but not limited to, Virtual Language Exchanges, working with ORIAS on K-12 Outreach.
Preparing written materials that represents CMES programs/initiatives with other organizations within the academic community and community stakeholders and to public audiences.
Refining and bringing thematic coherence to the CMES visiting scholar and distinguished visitor programs .
Collaborating with CMES staff to analyze, evaluate and further research objectives and expand existing programsincluding the Graduate Student Professional Development Programand developing new programs to expand the reach of the CMES on and off-campus.
Providing support to CMES faculty affiliates sharing common objectives.
Serving as primary consultant for large or complex research grant programs/initiatives.
Consulting with faculty and researchers on development of proposals.
Reviewing and analyzing the program’s and other funders’ portfolios for emerging issues and research.
Keeping abreast of developments in research area to identify expert advisors and peer reviewers.
Fulfilling certain duties delegated by the CMES Chair on an ad hoc basis.
Works with CMES staff to prepare for, advertise, and run CMES events Coordinates efforts with a variety of external and internal contacts.
Coordinates implementation with cross-organizational departments or external entities as needed.
Researches and drafts complex proposals, reports, briefings, executive summaries, and speeches.
Establishes and maintains contacts internally and with external constituents for the collection and exchange of data.
Develops scope of work, budgets, and reports for project requirements.
Provides analyses for complex budget, financial, academic, data, systems and resource projects working directly with all levels of managers.
Researches, monitors and analyzes.
Required Qualifications
Near native level written and oral communication skills in at least one of the four major Middle Eastern languages, viz. Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish
In-depth academic background and experience in Middle Eastern Studies research Required Successful grant-writing portfolio.
Experience living and/or working in the Middle East Required Administrative and fundraising experience, preferably in an educational setting.
Advanced written and oral communication skills in English .
Advanced skills analyzing information problems, situations, policies or procedures to define the problem, need, or objective.
Proven ability to formulate solutions, new program development, alternative choices and implications for implementation.
Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, visiting scholars, community groups, foundation program officers, and diverse groups to achieve results.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers, managers, and teams.
Advanced program planning and management of projects.
Willingness and ability to travel both domestically and internationally.
Basic website management and development.
Education/Training:
Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with content management systems, e.g., WordPress, and customer relationship management programs, e.g., Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, etc. a plus.
Education/Training:
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a field related to Middle Eastern Studies and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
