Position Summary

NSLI-Y is a critical component of a multi-agency federal initiative to increase U.S. citizens’ capacity to engage foreign governments and peoples through the critical language of Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian, and Turkish. NSLI-Y is a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and American Councils acts as the prime grantee, collaborating with other partner organizations. NSLI-Y provides merit-based scholarships for eligible U.S. high schools students to learn less commonly taught languages. Based in Washington, DC, the Program Coordinator position will primarily support participants and the implementation of the Virtual NSLI-Y program, assist in the coordination of special NSLI-Y alumni activities in 2020 and 2021, and support daily operations of the National Security Language Initiative for Youth administration department. The NSLI-Y Program Coordinator will report to the NSLI-Y Senior Program Manager for Administration.

Position Responsibilities

Supports the administration and implementation of the NSLI-Y and Virtual NSLI-Y;

Assists in outreach, student recruitment, and participant selection activities for NSLI-Y and Virtual NSLI-Y;

Acts as a student advisor to participants in the Virtual NSLI-Y program, including responding to participant inquiries or support needs, tracking required materials, assisting with technology support, facilitating community building activities and orientations, observing student engagement in class sessions, and ultimately, supporting participant retention and success;

Contributes to monitoring and evaluation activities for Virtual NSLI-Y;

Assists in coordination of activities, programs, and special events for NSLI-Y and Virtual NSLI-Y alumni;

Assists in outreach and selection for special alumni activities for NSLI-Y and Virtual NSLI-Y alumni;

Responds to inquiries from Virtual NSLI-Y and NSLI-Y applicants, participants, and alumni by phone and email;

Coordinates logistics, finances, and payments as needed;

Assists in operation of program databases;

Communicates with Virtual NSLI-Y teachers/staff, NSLI-Y partner organizations, and federal funder;

Contributes to the writing of program highlights, reports, proposals, and promotional materials;

Other administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in one of the target languages, international affairs, international education, education, or related field;

Professional experience (minimum of 3 years) in education, international education, study abroad, or virtual/cultural exchange;

Demonstrated success and professional experience in student advising, building strong rapport with students, and supporting students (high school aged, strongly preferred) from a variety of backgrounds;

Commitment to inclusion and equity;

Excellent written and oral communication skills;

Ability to handle high volumes of communication effectively and professionally;

Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team;

Ability to exercise problem-solving skills, good judgment, and discretion in handling sensitive information and participant issues;

Ability to approach challenges with flexibility, creativity, and a positive attitude;

Outstanding organizational and time-management skills;

Training and/or professional experience in virtual learning or virtual exchange programs strongly preferred;

Professional experience in facilitating meaningful virtual events is strongly preferred;

Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, social media platforms, and virtual platforms strongly preferred; and

Experience with language study, language teaching, and/or second language acquisition is desirable.

Additional Information about the Position

This position may require occasional work outside of regular business hours for Virtual NSLI-Y class observations, Virtual NSLI-Y community-building events, or other NSLI-Y events or trainings.
