Middle East Receiving and Copy Cataloging Specialist

Stanford Libraries is looking for a full time (100%), Monograph Receiving & Copy Cataloging Specialist (Library Specialist) to join our Acquisitions team. About the Position:
The Acquisitions Department manages the procurement of materials purchased for the world-renowned collections of Stanford Libraries. Our department is comprised of several units, each responsible for a specific function of the acquisitions process. The Monograph Receiving Unit is a team of seven production-oriented specialists who manage the receiving and copy cataloging of materials acquired from vendors around the world. The Middle East Receiving and Copy Cataloging Specialist reports to the Monograph Receiving Operations Manager and is responsible for timely receiving and processing of materials in different formats acquired on approval, via firm and standing orders, and as gifts, in Arabic, Turkish and other Middle Eastern languages for all SUL locations. The incumbent searches and loads records into the local system or creates brief records in MARC format. In addition, the Specialist performs copy cataloging and adds volumes and additional copies to the local processing system.

Core Duties:
Receives incoming library materials in local system following established written procedures

Transliterates Arabic script according to the American Library Association-Library of Congress (ALA-LC) Romanization Tables; adds or edits records in Arabic and other Arabic script languages

Evaluates incoming materials for handling decisions, searches local processing system

Searches bibliographic utilities to load appropriate MARC records into local system or creates brief, descriptive bibliographic records that meet requirements for automated batched searching, following guidelines and procedures based on RDA and AACR2 standards

Performs copy cataloging of materials in non-serial formats, correcting errors in transcription and adding descriptive information when required by local departmental policies and procedures

Creates/updates MARC holding records for multi-volume titles and accompanying materials according to local policies and procedures based on ANSI standards

Prioritizes and coordinates movement of non-serial Middle East Collection materials

Processes returns following local policies; may serve as a back-up to mail opening staff

Other duties as assigned according to operational need; may be assigned Expert Partner duties

Minimum Education and Experience Required:
Two-year college degree plus one or more years of experience in an academic library, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

Proficiency in Arabic and working knowledge of Turkish

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills

Ability to communicate library policy

Ability to apply judgment in choosing procedures and evaluating alternatives

Knowledge of Library of Congress call number system

Demonstrates experience in using judgment and initiative to analyze and recommend new procedures

Demonstrated computer literacy with communication software such as email

Demonstrated ability to perform detailed tasks accurately and efficiently

Other Knowledge Skills and Abilities May Include:
Ability to identify and work with materials in other languages such as Urdu, Hindi, or Pashto

Reading knowledge of an additional non-English, Western European language

Experience in using bibliographic utilities and databases to search non-Roman scripts.

Experience in an academic library

Working knowledge of SirsiDynix integrated library system

Physical Requirements:
Ability to push a cart weighing up to 650 lbs. that requires an initial push force up to 70 lbs

Ability to work in an environment that is dusty and or moldy

Ability to lift books that are up to 10 pounds

Ability to kneel and reach

Must be able to stand for many hours
