Veterinarian

Job Summary

Responsible for the health and well-being of Butterball’s turkey flocks to produce wholesome products efficiently and safely by conducting all necessary veterinary procedures.

Key Responsibilities

1. Serves as the veterinarian providing necessary care and procedures to ensure turkey health and well-being.

2. Provides veterinary diagnostics and technical support for laboratories.

3. Provides and documents surveillance, clinical diagnostics, and treatment regimens for flocks.

4. Provides oversight to ensure standard operating procedures for animal care and well-being are met.

5. Acts as a primary liaison with industry colleagues, customers, and regulatory agencies.

6. Provides guidance to Butterball live operations and processing associates to ensure efficient production of healthy birds for processing.

7. Promotes and supports the Butterball Animal Care and Well-Being and Biosecurity programs by providing training, conducting internal audits, and coordinating third-party audits for program effectiveness and results.

8. Researches, investigates, and evaluates health problems to develop and implement treatment and prevention strategies.

9. Assists in research projects. Generates grower and associate communications to share health trends and research conclusions.

10. Analyzes long term disease trends and provides recommendations for continuous improvement across the enterprise.

11. Coordinates surveillance programs and works with internal and external diagnostic laboratories.

12. Interacts with processing plant management and USDA to address health and food safety related plant issues.

13. Provides timely approval of prescriptions.

14. Oversees antibiotic use and ensures treatment plans are documented, communicated and followed.

Minimum Qualifications (Educations & Experience

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
  • Eligible for applicable state veterinary licensure
  • Eligible for USDA Category II Accreditation

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and compliance with animal care and well-being and biosecurity procedures
  • Advanced poultry health management skills
  • Expert understanding of compliance with appropriate veterinary practices
  • Excellent animal handling skills
  • Strong time management, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Microsoft Office suite; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Good organizational skills
  • May require occasional night and weekend work

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Poultry training or experience
  • Residency or Masters in Poultry

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, keyboard, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions

  • Work will be performed in a variety of conditions including climate-controlled office environment(s); in a manufacturing plant environment with varying conditions, such as cold areas, wet areas, warm areas, chemicals, and other site conditions; and in a farm environment including working outdoors in seasonal conditions with live animals and at times in dusty environments. This position requires the individual to wear and work in personal protective equipment while in the manufacturing and farm environment. This individual may be working around sick or diseased animals where additional precautions may need to be taken.
  • The noise level of the office and farm environment is usually moderate. The noise level in the manufacturing environment may exceed 85 DBA and require hearing protection. Showering in and out of farm locations may be required.
  • Required to travel up to 50% of the time visiting one of our farms or facilities, potentially more pending project needs.
