Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women Office in North Macedonia is in line with its priorities set in the UN Women Strategic Plan (2022-2025) and the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2021-2025), is coordinating the efforts of the UNCT on gender equality, supports the Country on the normative commitments and is working in thematic areas of governance and national planning, ending violence against women and women, peace, and security. In fulfilling its mandate, UN Women is cooperating with UN, the government the CSOs and other key partners to advocate for women’s empowerment and advancement of gender equality.

In 2015, the United Nations (UN) Member States adopted the “Leave No One Behind” or LNOB agenda which seeks to enable and accelerate progress in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by putting the furthest behind at the forefront of development initiatives. It represents the unequivocal commitment of all UN Member States to eradicate poverty in all its forms, end discrimination and exclusion, and reduce the inequalities and vulnerabilities that leave people behind and undermine the potential of individuals and of humanity.

The LNOB analysis will seek to identify the groups left behind using the UN’s established five circle criteria for identification of those left behind: discrimination, geography, vulnerability to shocks, governance, and socioeconomic status and multidimensional poverty. Generation of evidence, data collection and disaggregation that go beyond geography and age, to include all grounds of discrimination and other root causes of inequalities are identified. Also, the LNOB analysis is expected to identify who is left behind in the country, the degrees and variation of their vulnerability, analysis of causes, obstacles standing in their way, and opportunities and dynamics in the country.

The UN Women Office in North Macedonia is seeking the services of an experienced national consultant to conduct mapping and analysis of vulnerable groups of women in the country. The consultant as Team Leader will be responsible the certain region and to coordinate the other national consultants during the process and to integrate the inputs of their reports. The results will be presented in a comprehensive report with recommendations that will inform future advocacy efforts. Summarized results to be presented to UN Women staff and to other relevant stakeholders.

The Team Leader will work under overall guidance of assigned team member and direct supervision by the Head of Office, of UN Women Office in the country.

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Certification:

Specialist/Advisor levels:

• University degree in gender studies, social studies, public policy, development studies, or any other degree relevant to the requirements of the ToR. Master’s degree is considered as an asset.

Experience:

  • At least 3 years’ experience in relevant research and work experience in international development, non-governmental organization and/or civil society organization particular focus on and skills in mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) research
  • At least 1 years’ experience in conducting mapping exercises, surveys, interviews, focus group discussions or consultations with governments and civil society actors;
  • At least 1 years of experience in gender mainstreaming, women’s rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment or any related field, including analytical and research experience;
  • Proven experience in conducting gender analysis, gender research, and/or knowledge products
  • Demonstrated experience in working with media, academia, CSOs activism with focus on capacity building, awareness raising, teaching/training or other activity related to vulnerable groups
  • Excellent written communication skills are essential for effectively present the findings of the qualitative analysis and ability to synthesize information;

Languages:

  •  Fluency in Macedonian and English is required.

Knowledge of Albanian is an asset.
