Duties and Responsibilities

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the part of the UN Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions. Located within the Information Systems Section (ISS) of the Humanitarian Sector Division (HSD), the Field Information Services (FIS) Unit is responsible for strengthening the information management capacity of OCHA in both disaster preparedness and response. In particular, the principal roles of FIS are to: facilitate the effective strategic management of OCHA’s field information domain, i.e. provide coordination and leadership in the application of information management in disaster preparedness and response, helping to assure that the information resources and information management expertise required by OCHA to function effectively in emergencies is available. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and may include: – Assisting with the translation and implementation of GIS cartographic standards and style guides from existing documentation – Assisting with the preparation of high-quality digital (webmaps) and print (paper) map products, including style files, map layouts, map templates preparation and quality control. – Reviewing and validating map products, symbology, labeling and layer structures to ensure compliance with established standards and quality requirements; – Assisting with the preparation and maintenance of technical documentation, standard operating procedures, user guides and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) materials; – Supporting the organization and management of GIS resources, metadata and content-sharing processes within ArcGIS Enterprise; – Researching and documenting best practices related to cartography, GIS standards and Esri technologies; – Providing support for testing, troubleshooting and improving GIS workflows and applications; This internship shall be based in Istanbul (Türkiye) with different working modalities, either in-person, remotely, hybrid, full time or part time. The internship is being offered for a maximum period of six (6) months, beginning at a mutually agreed time.

Qualifications/special skills

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Please note that you will be required to provide an official certificate at a later stage. – Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Relevant fields include Geographic Information Systems (GIS), information management, geography, information technology, information systems, information science, social sciences, or another closely related discipline. Please note that you will be required to provide an official certificate at a later stage. – Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro is required. – Skill in implementing GIS cartographic, symbology and visualization standards including the creation and management of style files, map templates and related GIS resources is desirable. – Experience with Python scripting is desirable. – Degree studies in GIS or a closely related discipline beyond the minimum educational requirement and completion of GIS training programmes, examinations, or professional certifications in GIS mapping and spatial analysis is an advantage.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in understanding, speaking, writing and reading English is required for the internship. Knowledge of Turkish is considered an advantage.
