Course Description
MIDEAST 200: Introduction to the Middle East
How is history useful for understanding the Middle East today? This class focuses on six critical features to think about the presence of the past in the Middle East. Writing (from ancient scripts and languages to graffiti of the Arab Spring); Gods, Prophets, and Imams (from pagan gods of Mesopotamia and Egypt to Khomeini and ISIS); Sacred Geography (Jerusalem and Mecca: The holy cities of Judaism, Christianity & Islam); Slavery (from harems & military slaves to migrant workers); Floods & Pandemics (from the Mesopotamian Flood narratives to Covid 19); and Race, Ethnicity, and Nationalism (from the evolution of human skin to colonialism and the creation of nation-states), all have different pasts. We will explore these six phenomena, using history to illustrate their underlying dynamics. This class will be conducted through lectures and interactive discussions held during class time.

Responsibilities*
Students who apply to this posting will be considered for one 35% GSI position.
Primary responsibilities of the position include: attending lecture; leading two discussion sections a week; grading all assignments; creating and implementing teaching plans in consultation with the lead instructor of the course; attending regular meetings with the lead instructor; assisting with the assessment of students during final term grading; holding a minimum of two office hours each week in the South Thayer Building.
Students who have not previously been a GSI for the College of LSA will be required to attend the online CRLT GSI Teaching Orientation as an online program.
Please consult the LSA Course Guide or email the instructor directly for the most up-to-date information about the planned format of the lecture portion of this course. It is assumed that all discussion sections will be available to students in a remote format (this may be synchronous or asynchronous, to be determined in consultation with the lead faculty for the course and in response to student needs). After hiring, GSIs will be asked if they want to offer an in-person component of some or all discussion sections, but this is not expected or required.
Required Qualifications*
Previous coursework in Middle East, History, Anthropology or a related discipline relevant to the course content/subject matter. Students whose undergraduate degree is from an institution where the language of instruction is not English must have already taken or be currently enrolled in the English Language Institute’s ELI 994. The student must have a passing score of 4 on the Oral English Test (OET).
Desired Qualifications*
An undergraduate major or minor in literature or history, preferably focused on Middle Eastern History, Jewish Studies, Women’s Studies, or Comparative Literature. Some knowledge of Persian, Turkish or Arabic language is desirable. Enrollment in a graduate program focused on History, Anthropology, Judaic, or Middle East Studies, or Comparative Literature is helpful, as well as previous experience in higher education instruction.
