Cartographic Metadata Librarian

This is a 3-year fixed term position. The position is dual posted at Librarian 2 and 3.

Stanford Libraries (SL) is seeking a full-time Cartographic Metadata Librarian to work directly with paper and digital historical and antiquarian maps held primarily in collections at the David Rumsey Map Center (DRMC). The goal of this position is to enable discovery and use of these materials across a variety of platforms including the library catalog, geospatial discovery environments, exhibits, and interactive indexes.

Regular tasks will include providing focused cataloging services based on specialized knowledge of metadata standards. Collections including those in French, Dutch, German, Latin, Spanish and Turkish will need to be processed. The person in this position will also assist library patrons (faculty, students, researchers, and other library users) with identifying and locating sources of information based upon the work done to surface materials through the library’s discovery platforms.

The position is based in the David Rumsey Map Center and reports to the Head and Curator of the Center.

Core Duties:
Create discovery metadata for cartographic materials in accordance with accepted local practice and applicable national standards. Currently, predominate schemas are RDA applied according to the BIBCO standards and MODS.

Assess the metadata requirements for new physical and digital collections.

Create project estimates for the cataloging and metadata work.

Participate in library-wide projects to make cartographic materials available through a variety of outlets including the library catalog, geospatial web portals, exhibit sites, and mobile applications.

Provide feedback on the display of records across multiple discovery environments.

Participate in relevant professional activities both within and outside Stanford.

Assist patrons and staff with reference and research inquiries by searching shelves, files, and electronic resources.

Staff the reference desk in the Center as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

At a Librarian 2 level:
Work directly with the Digital Library Systems and Services group and the Metadata Development Unit to set standards, create crosswalks for metadata transformations (typically to MODS), and perform quality assurance on those transformations.

Design, implement, and manage workflows for original and copy cataloging, using all available resources from the professional librarian staff to hourly employees and student workers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries or a combination of education and relevant experience. Two or more years of relevant experience in a library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience required at the Librarian 1 level; three or more years of relevant experience in a library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience required at the Librarian 2 level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (at Librarian 1 level):
Knowledge of relevant aspects of library operations including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends and emerging technologies.

Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of people.

Effective problem solving, analytical and organizational skills.

Demonstrated broad knowledge of library discovery environments, office automation software, and online resources.

Ability to quickly learn and use print and online tools and resources and in the area of specialization.

Evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills.

High level of comfort in digital environments coupled with the ability to read complex visual information.

Other Relevant Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities May Include (at Librarian 1 level):

Practical knowledge of current cataloging procedures and principles as defined in RDA, AACR2, MARC Bibliographic, Holdings, and Authorities formats. Ability to rapidly learn and implement new cataloging procedures and principles adopted by the Department.

Working knowledge of existing and emerging metadata standards, such as MODS, Dublin Core, METS, XML, and relevant thesauri or ontologies, as required by special projects.

Excellent analytical and problem solving skills combined with attention to detail for complex, detail-oriented work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (at Librarian 2 level):
Three or more years of experience in a relevant library setting or similar organization with evidence of capacity to work at a high level of responsibility or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Ability to work effectively in a team environment and negotiate issues with people from different parts of the library.

Physical Requirements*:
Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.

Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).

Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.

Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:
