Position Summary:
The Peer Specialist provides an opportunity for clients to work with their peers in helping to address their individual recovery process. The Peer Specialist is expected to demonstrate his/her abilities, education, work ethics, and life skills with peers.Provides general office support as assigned. Works with individuals to assist them in accessing appropriate support services and entitlements, medical care, community resources, and family support systems in an effort to facilitate recovery and rehabilitation.

Essential Functions of the Job:
Works with various providers in the region or system to facilitate access to services. Is well versed in resources available in the region. Supports the “No Wrong Door” philosophy.

Conducts new client orientation and rapport development with the program. Acts as program ambassador. Performs collateral interviews as indicated. Assists clients with intake packet materials.

Offers personal, practical experience, knowledge, and insight for the benefit of clients. Provides expertise about the recovery process, symptom management, and ability to sustain a higher quality of life.

Provides acculturation support, organized acculturation activities, and communicates client and program needs to the multidisciplinary clinical team. Facilitates Peer to Peer Recovery Groups or Patient Advisory Groups.

Collaborates to foster a team culture that respects, recognizes, and acknowledges each client’s point of view. Ensures client choice and self-determination in treatment planning.

Provides peer counseling and consultation to clients, families, and team members. Informs/consults program management regarding crises and/or unusual or critical incidents. Responsible for documentation specific to services provided.

Assist and support outreach activities in the community as directed (i.e. Health Fairs, School Based Events, etc.)

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Attends trainings offered by SYHC’s Training and/or Behavioral Health Department to improve and increase competencies in the areas identified by the Program Manager and/or Lead staff.

Attends training on Cultural Diversity to identify personal cultural values, assumptions and beliefs; understands how these beliefs may lead to stereotyping various cultural groups and affect client care and decision making; demonstrates competency in this area.

Attends trainings regarding the specialized needs of specific threshold and target populations such as African Americans, Latinos, Asians, American Indians, Chaldean, Kurdish, and Arab immigrants, and demonstrates competency in this area.

Attends training on the Comprehensive Continuous Integrated System of Care (CCISC) model as directed. Shows competence with the model and its principles and welcomes and serves individuals with co-occurring disorders (COD).

Completes all required continuing education requirements annually, including a minimum of four (4) hours of cultural competency training each fiscal year. Documents training in the Center’s training log.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Program Manager and/or Lead Clinician.

Job Requirements:
Education Required (Minimum level of education):
High School Diploma or GED

Certifications/Licenses Required:
California Drivers’ License in good standing & proof of insurance

Experience Required (Minimum level of experience):
Completion of Peer Specialist Training Program. Bilingual Arabic & understanding of Chaldean and Middle Eastern Culture.

Verbal and Written Skills Required to perform the Job:
Bilingual (English and Arabic). Good written and verbal communication.

Working Traits:
Superb organizational ability and exceptionally analytical.

Technical Knowledge and Skills Required to Perform the Job:
Experience and knowledge with Microsoft Office software.

Equipment Used:
Computers, phones, vehicles, copy machines and fax machines, etc.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Long Irregular hours.May work weekends.Prolonged periods of sitting, and constant walking and standing. Driving and occasional travel required.
