The Chicago Language Center (CLC) is a vibrant hub for innovative language pedagogy, providing professional development and support to language instructors and students at all levels of the over 50 languages taught each year at the University of Chicago. The Office of Language Assessment (OLA) is an integral component of all these undertakings and plays a critical role across all languages taught on the UChicago campus, as well as providing English language assessment services.

Job Summary:
The ARCA™ (Academic Reading Comprehension Assessment) is an innovative test of reading comprehension skills for graduate students working on scholarly texts. Reporting to the Managing Director, the ARCA Test Developer will develop, review and grade the tests used to assess graduate students’ academic reading comprehension proficiency in multiple foreign languages. Test developers will work remotely, and will be trained in all aspects of ARCA development and grading. Current needs include these languages: Chinese, French, German, Hebrew (modern), Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. We encourage candidates with a PhD in pertinent fields to apply.

Responsibilities:
Coordinate closely with the Office of Language Assessment in ARCA test development and grading.

Attend a test development and rater training session and showing evidence of accurate and consistent grading.

Report ARCA results to the Office of Language Assessment in a timely fashion.

Coordinate with other testers and Office of Language Assessment staff in reviewing ARCAs during the development stage.

Employment is contingent upon demand.

This is a part-time, 10-hour-per-week seasonal position.

Competencies:
ACTFL Advanced High or Superior language proficiency (or the equivalent), or native speaker proficiency in a given language.

Excellent communications skills, especially writing skills.

Use one’s own personal computer to develop and review tests.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, or Certifications:
Education:
Advanced degree required.

PhD is strongly preferred.

Experience:
Background working with secondary literature in research or other scholarly contexts.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and multimedia preferred.
