The Life Skills program at ISANS is looking for people to join a team of support workers. The program
is offered as part of ISANS settlement services to Government Assisted Refugees arriving in Nova
Scotia. We support people when they first arrive, in order for them to live independently and safely in
their new environment. In consultation with the Coordinators, Life Skills Program, these positions will
be responsible for:
Providing practical orientation and support to ISANS clients in relation to their initial
settlement needs such as:
personal safety
apartment and city living
life in Canada
shopping
getting to know the neighbourhood
public transportation
Finding community resources
The Life Skills Support Workers maintain accurate records on completed activities and will attend
meetings and professional development workshops to ensure that their skills and knowledge are kept
up to date.
The ideal candidates will have the following:
Are able to speak Tigrinya, Arabic, Swahili or Kurdish (for adults) and Arabic, Swahili or Kurdish
(for youth) and come from the same parts of the World as our clients.
Are flexible, patient and interested in helping people learn new things.
Are able to work independently.
Are interested in being involved in their communities and in supporting people to be
independent in their new lives in order to successfully settle in Nova Scotia.
Have an English level of CLB 4 with the ability to write, read and speak English words.
Have lived in Canada for at least 1 year.
Are able to participate in up to 9 training sessions (sessions will be paid).
Are able to work with people from their same region/country of origin, but who might have
different cultural or religious backgrounds.
Have some knowledge of ISANS and its services, and of other community organizations that
might be of interest to the newcomer families.
Are able to be flexible in their schedules in order to take on this casual position with no
guaranteed hours, that will depend on the arrival of newcomers and their need for this service.
Having experience with LGBTQ communities is a strong asset.
Terms of Employment
This is a Casual on-call position with flexible hours that will vary depending on the work volume and
demand for specific languages; there is no guarantee of working hours. Initially, there will be various
training sessions that you will be expected to attend. Successful candidates will need to be flexible and
available to work at short notice. Pay rate is $18.69 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.
