BENEFITS AND GOALS:
Observe and practice grant management techniques with the Matching Grant program, which helps newly arrived refugees achieve economic self-sufficiency within six months of arrival to the United States.
Through one-on-one client interaction, learn about acculturation challenges and opportunities refugees and other immigrants with legal status encounter after U.S. arrival
Learn about services and requirements during the first 180 days after arrival in the U.S.
Hands-on participation in helping new arrivals settle in and on their way to self-sufficiency
Experience how government social services impact the lives of new arrivals
DUTIES: In cooperation with and as directed by MRS staff,
Assist with financial compliance for the Matching Grant program
Mentor and orient families during their first six months after arrival in the U.S.
Participate and co-present at in-house group Pre-Employment Training
Aid through the employment process for Matching Grant clients, including resume review, interview preparation, and application assistance.
Focus on the financial aspect of the Matching Grant program, including submitting check requests, updating financial logs, and maintaining client files.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Class standing – Rising Junior through graduate
Working knowledge of at least one critical foreign language preferred (Dari, Farsi, Arabic, Spanish, Pashto, or Kurdish)
Open to other cultures and beliefs
Good interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills
Flexible and adaptable regarding change in routines and duties
TIME COMMITMENT:
4-6 hours daily, three or more days per week, M-F (or equivalent)
The duration of this internship is one academic year
EXPECTATIONS:
Be reliable and on time; have a reliable means of transportation to our office (car or public transport)
Preferred, but not required: driver’s license with a clean record, at least two years driving experience, and a knowledge of the northern Virginia area
Act in a professional and ethical manner in all interactions with agency staff and clients
