The Site Management and Monitoring (SM&M) department, a country based organisation with staff in over 30 countries, is responsible for leading the delivery of clinical trials at a country level. Our mission is to ensure that high quality study data is collected in a timely and productive way to support Oncology R&D and BioPharmaceuticals R&D strategies.

What you’ll do

In the role as Regional Business Strategy and Planning Director, you will be responsible for providing strategic direction and driving business planning and control in the Regional Leadership Team. In addition, providing direction and leadership through the Cluster and Country Directors around project allocation, country resourcing, portfolio delivery and associated global business aligned priorities.

You can represent SM&M in cross-functional groups, lead global improvement projects and provide governance to SMM Centralised System Support. Additionally, act as the ‘go-to’ point of contact for Regional Directors to gather and interpret insight on SM&M organisation as well as influencing and enabling Regional Director to make rapid decisions that shape the future SM&M organization and strategy.

You will lead Business Office activities in the region with functional/direct reports. Also closely interact with the global head Business Strategy & Portfolio and the other two regions to ensure consistency in business priority planning, anticipating portfolio risk and opportunity, optimizing resource utilisation and shared services across regions.

You will report to the Global Head Business Strategy and Portfolio, SM&M with a dotted line to the Senior Regional Director SM&M AMEA. You will play a pivotal role in the SM&M AMEA Regional Leadership Team.

We will rely on you to:

  • Actively work with global, regional, and local stakeholders to evaluate and understand the business environment internally and externally to develop and implement alternative strategies for shape and size of skills and capabilities within SM&M and Regions
  • Manage overall Regional and SM&M operational performance and effective delivery of SM&M studies by applying a full understanding of internal and external global issues to drive individual country and cluster performance (Milestone/Patient delivery, Cost, Productivity)
  • Lead performance oversight development and provide governance to Global system support to allow SM&M and Region to maintain a cross country overview of current and forecasted study plans, resources, workload demand and KPI
  • Identify portfolio risks and opportunities and provide strategic insight and input to promote effective decision making to drive SM&M performance
  • Drive discussions with GFSI (Global Feasibility and Site Intelligence) team and global project teams to provide strategic input to new projects, including feasibility planning, demand and Country FTE cost estimations and forecasted view for input to portfolio investment decisions
  • Identify external trends and capabilities and deploy cutting edge technologies and processes to meet the specific challenges in SM&M and Region

Essential for the role

You hold a BSc degree in a relevant field, which is complemented by excellent knowledge in and experience of the Clinical Development area. Furthermore, you have therapeutic area expertise and project management capability, combined with excellent interpersonal skills translated into a both global and local leadership style. This is evidenced by your ability to influence strategically and persuade tactfully, to acquire desired outcomes while maintaining effective, positive, organizational relationships.

You also possess:

  • Proven leadership ability promoting, motivating and empowering others to accomplish individual, team and organizational objectives
  • Ability to look for and champion more efficient and effective methods and processes of delivering quality clinical trials
  • Significant understanding of strategy formulation and evaluation and the management of a vast portfolio within a clinical or pharmaceutical environment
  • Proven ability to lead cross functional working groups and teams
  • Strong strategic and analytical thinking

Desirable for the role

  • PhD in scientific field
  • Professional qualification – Mastery of Clinical Development area and multi-disciplinary experience (cross-functional or functional)
  • Extensive knowledge of the latest technical and regulatory expectations
  • Familiarity with the latest research and thinking
